Columbiana - January 29, 2005 -William Gaylord Gloss, age 86, of 405 Edgewood Drive died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday in the Parkside Health Care Center.

He was born March 30, 1918 in Wellsville, son of Alonzo G. and Sara Lyons Gloss and had lived in Columbiana since 1947 coming from Florence PA.

He had been a Teacher at New Waterford Schools, 1947-1952, then he was a High School Principal for Columbiana Exempted Village School District, 1952-1977.

Mr. Gloss was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbiana, an Ordained Elder of the Church, taught Sunday School for 23 years and most recently worked with the youth of the church in the Youth Club and been active in the church for many years.

He was a member of Allen Masonic Lodge #276 F&AM, a 32 Degree Mason in Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Youngstown. Mr. Gloss was also a member of Ohio Retired Teachers Association, the Benjamin Firestone Post #390 American Legion at Columbiana, the Tri-State Antique Auto Club, and past president of the former Columbiana Kiwanis Club, the Columbiana Fire Department and the Columbiana Meals on Wheels.

He graduated from Wellsville High School and obtained a Bachelor of Education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and a Master of Education from the University of Pittsburgh.

He was inducted into the Columbiana Athletic Hall of Fame, February 17, 2001.

Mr. Gloss was a Captain in the Army Air Corps during WW II, serving as Bombsight Maintenance Office, AAF Instructor and Headquarters Company Commander.

His wife, the former Ruth Marie Morrow, whom he married July 8, 1942, a son, Gaylord L.(Grace) Gloss of Birmingham AL; a son-in-law, Larry Reed of Bolingbrook IL; two sisters-in-law, Charlene Gloss of Pittsburgh and Lois Gloss of Lusby MD; and two grandsons, William U. and Harris M. Gloss; survive him.

A daughter, Grace Reed and two brothers, Donald L. and James Gloss preceded him in death.

Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church where he will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Robert McCreight officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbiana Cemetery.

Friends may call 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Monday at Warrick-Kummer Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Fund of the church.

The Allen Masonic Lodge will conduct a service at 6:45 p.m. Monday. The Benjamin Firestone Post honor Guard will render military honors.
