"Together Again"
Columbiana-Walter “Walt” L. Schmidt, 82, of Columbiana, passed away Wednesday evening, January 21, 2015, at his home.
Mr. Schmidt was born March 13, 1932 in East Palestine, a son of the late Paul and Mildred Rogers Schmidt and had lived in this area all of his life.
Walt was a maintenance manager for the former Kaiser Refractory in Columbiana for many years. Walt served in the US Army during the Korean War and was a Purple Heart Recipient. He was a member of the Benjamin Firestone Post #290 American Legion. He was also a life time member of the Beaver Creek Horseman’s Association and loved riding horses. He was the girls and boys basketball manager for Columbiana Schools for many years. Walt and his wife, Jeanette, delivered Meals on Wheels for a number of years.
His wife, the former Jeanette Spanabel, whom he married August 22, 1953, died October 5, 2014.
He is survived by his two daughters, Pam (Richard) Schmidt and Nancy (Bud) Morrow both of Columbiana; his two sons, Rick (Debbie) Schmidt of Columbiana and Randy Schmidt of North Lima; two sisters, Barbara Reeves of Springfield, OH and Rita Macek of Bessemer, PA; a brother, Robert Schmidt of FL; eight grandchildren, four step grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and six step great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Larry, Andy and Tom Schmidt.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
Memorial tributes in Walt’s memory may be made to Hospice of the Valley.
