Virginia C. Schmidt

Columbiana October 22, 2008 Virginia C. "Sam" Schmidt, 83, died at 2:50 a.m. Wednesday at her home.

Mrs. Schmidt was born March 9, 1925 in Farmington, PA, a daughter of Joseph Estep and Catherine Ophelia Cunningham Conrad. She attended a one room school in Farmington, PA for the first eight grades and then attended and graduated from Uniontown Senior High School. She moved to Ohio in 1943 where she worked at General Tire, NRM and the Vienna, OH US Post Office. She was also an assembler and press operator at the former Ballonoff Metals in Columbiana for 23 years retiring in 1991. She was a member of the East Fairfield United Methodist Church where she served on several committees. Sam loved playing the guitar and piano but her first love was caring for her husband, children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, George A. Schmidt, whom she married March 1, 1947; a son, Dale Schmidt and his wife Leah of Cortland; a daughter, Jill and son in law Timothy Khol of Kent; a son, Gary Schmidt of Columbiana; a sister, Roberta Nelson of Columbiana; three grandchildren, Erika Schmidt, Craig Schmidt and Justin Khol; three step grandchildren, Matthew Khol, Adrienne (Rob) Hammill and Tara Knight; and two step great grandchildren, Rebecca and Joseph Hammill.

A sister, Lucille Glover is deceased.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the East Fairfield United Methodist Church with the Reverend Michael Namy and the Reverend Charles Ready officiating. Burial will be in Columbiana Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana and from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at the church.
