Salem, OH-Sidney Thomas Carter, 85, formerly of Columbiana, went home to be with his Lord at 4:50 a.m. Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Akron City Hospital.
Mr. Carter was born March 13, 1925 in Youngstown, a son of Sidney Taylor and Janet Counsell Carter and had lived in the Columbiana County area most of his life.
He had been a stockroom manager for over 39 years for the former National Rubber Machine retiring in 1991.
Tom was a 1943 graduate of East Palestine High School where he was the Tri-State High Jump Champion. He served in the South Pacific 2nd Division for the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII. He also fought in Saipan and Tinian. He spent time in Okinawa and Occupied Japan. He was a skilled sharp shooter and made three beach landings.
Tom attended Salem Bible College where he loved studying the bible. He also loved playing the guitar.
He is survived by his wife, the former Olive Bryarly, whom he married May 31, 1947; two daughters, Ellen (Marlin) Carter Clark of Williamsfield and Shirley (Wade) Carter Clark of Peninsula; six grandchildren, Joshua (Melissa) Clark, Nathan (Jennifer) Clark, Mackenzie (Brett) Clark Boothe, Jesse Clark, Evan (Cassie) Clark and Wade Clark; and three great grandchildren, Harrison Clark, Hudson Boothe, and Nolan Boothe.
A brother, Walter Carter preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011, at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana with Pastor Douglas George of the First United Methodist Church, Salem officiating. Burial will be in East Fairfield Cemetery where military honors will be accorded. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
