Sara Weaver

Sara Agnes Weaver, 97, went to be with her Lord, Tuesday, August 12, 2025 surrounded by family. Sara was born April 1, 1928 near Columbiana, Ohio to Edwin and Lena (Wenger) Weaver.

She answered the call of God at age 13, and was baptized into the church at age 16. Later at a Howard Hammer tent meeting she dedicated herself to a life of full time Christian service- a calling she lived out passionately. She graduated from nursing school in 1956. After a year at Salem hospital, she went to serve in Mathis, Texas in a small maternity hospital. After several years, she came home and worked in Salem Emergency Room and Youngstown Hospital. In 1979 she joined Salem Visiting Nurses. After retirement, she continued to care for people in their homes. She was a member of Rockview Mennonite Church in Youngstown and loved her work there with inner city children. It was during this time she met Irma Davis, and the two of them did what they could to spread God’s story in Youngstown. Sara opened her home to an Estonian refugee family. She had a great interest in the Christian Chinese churches and spent several weeks smuggling Bibles there in her retirement years. One could tell of her desire for peace throughout the world, her dedication to memorizing Scripture, or her compassion for those in unfortunate circumstances.

She was an active member at Midway Mennonite Church at the time of her death. She served as a deaconess. Sara never missed Sunday School and enjoyed both teaching and being a part of the class. She often talked of her small group Bible study and how much she enjoyed that. Another important part of her retirement years was her “family” at Harmony Village and being the “peanut butter lady” at God’s Choice on Monday evening.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers – Paul, David, and Howard, and her sisters- Alma, Edith, and Mary Ellen, and 8 nieces and nephews. Left to treasure our many memories of Sara are: a sister Anna Katherine Reesor (Ontario), 31 nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and great- great nieces and nephews. Her ability to call us by our first name and middle name was a testament to her memory and her love for family. “Aunt Sara” colored so many of our childhood memories. When hurt, we just called Aunt Sara- she would know what to do. She enjoyed traveling and visited family scattered over the globe, as she had opportunity.

A viewing will be held Sunday August 17, 2025 from 5-8 p.m. at Mt. Joy Mennonite Church, 549 Chestnut Street, Leetonia Ohio. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 18, 2025 10:30 a.m. at Mt. Joy Church.

The family wants to thank Eva and Joy Weaver for opening their home and graciously caring for Aunt Sara in the last weeks of her life. They also appreciated the care and support from the Hospice team.
