Cortland - Sam Penn, age 77, of Cortland, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Lake Vista in Cortland.
He was born on July 17, 1947, in Warren, the son of the late Jack and Ruth Garrett Penn.
Sam was a 1965 graduate of Lakeview High School and was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam War era. He had worked as a tool and die maker for Delphi, retiring in 2009 and for LRB Tool and Die in Warren, retiring in 2023. He loved antique cars and was a Tri Five Chevy enthusiast having owned several 1957 Chevy’s. He enjoyed working in his yard and tending to his garden. Sam also enjoyed traveling to various wineries and spending time with family and friends. He was a sports enthusiast supporting the Cleveland INDIANS, Browns, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Sam also enjoyed watching NASCAR as well as motocross and drag racing. Mostly, Sam enjoyed his family. He rarely missed his children’s or grandchildren’s activities and always looked forward to the family gatherings. He was a kind and gentle man who will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathy Springer Penn, whom he married on September 7, 1969; two sons, Owen Penn of Cortland and Matt (Kelli) Penn of Cortland; a sister, Jackie Adams of Warren; two grandsons, Trevor (Alli) Penn, and Jeremy (Hannah) Penn; three granddaughters, Haiden Penn, Avery and Allie Penn, and by three great grandsons, Barrett, Roman and Carter Penn. Also surviving is his beloved dog, Ellie.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Peter Rossi and Son Memorial Chapel in Warren.
Sam will be laid to rest at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman Ohio where private military honors will be observed.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the American Legion Post #540, 369 S. Colonial Dr. Cortland, OH 44410.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home in Leetonia.
