Ryan Daniel Houck, born March 3, 2014, known lovingly to all as Ryan the Lion, passed February 18, 2026. He was a shining light in the lives of everyone who knew him. From the very beginning, Ryan showed a bravery far beyond his years, enduring countless surgeries and long hospital stays with a strength that inspired doctors, nurses, family, and friends alike. His courage was quiet but mighty, rooted in a soul that was pure, gentle, and endlessly loving.
Ryan had the bluest eyes—eyes that seemed to look straight into your heart—and the fluffiest hair that perfectly matched his warm spirit. He was known for his extraordinary yawns and stretches, moments that brought smiles and laughter to those around him. Simple joys meant everything to Ryan: the magic of Mickey Mouse, the excitement of traveling to Disney World three times, and the comfort of warm sunshine at the beach. He loved the feeling of the sun on his face, soaking in the beauty of the world around him.
The lion and the sloth were Ryan’s spirit animals—fierce and brave, yet peaceful and content. These perfectly reflected who he was: a warrior with a gentle heart.
Ryan adored his three brothers more than anything. Through his life, he taught them lessons no book ever could—about love, resilience, compassion, and the beauty and fragility of life. One of the greatest joys for our family was watching Ryan participate in Challenger Baseball. He loved playing under the lights, and our hearts were full seeing him “run” the bases while his brothers happily pushed him along, all of them laughing together, united in an activity they could share side by side.
Ryan also found joy and expression through the special needs theater program at Main Street Theater, through Crown Productions and Squeaky Wheel Theater Company. These experiences gave our family memories we will forever treasure, and we remain deeply thankful for the love, inclusion, and creativity these programs provided.
Ryan is lovingly remembered by his parents, Dan and Meghan Witmer Houck; his three brothers, Grayson Houck, Brady Houck and Oliver Houck; maternal grandparents, Richard and Margie Witmer; paternal grandparents, Ted and Kelly Houck and great grandmother, Rita Fitzsimmons.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Reese Elizabeth Houck.
Our family is also profoundly grateful to the A Kid Again organization, which gave Ryan and our family the priceless gift of adventure and togetherness—allowing illness to take a timeout. The experiences we shared through this organization created memories we will carry in our hearts for a lifetime.
Ryan was deeply loved by many, but he shared an especially close and cherished bond with his Nene. She was a constant source of love, comfort, and unwavering support, always there for Ryan and for our family. We are forever grateful for all she has done and for the love she poured into his life.
The Houck family extends our deepest gratitude to the incredible team of doctors, nurses, and social workers who cared for Ryan and, in such a short time, became like family to us. Your compassion, gentleness, and unwavering support surrounded Ryan with dignity and love, and carried our family through our most difficult days.
We are especially grateful to Akron Children’s Palliative Care and Crossroads Hospice. You treated us with such tenderness and genuine care. You walked beside us with kindness, strength, and grace, and we will forever hold that gift in our hearts.
We are eternally thankful to have had you in our lives.
Though our hearts ache in his absence, Ryan the Lion’s legacy lives on in the love he gave, the courage he showed, and the lessons he taught us all. He will forever be remembered for his bravery, his gentle spirit, and the joy he brought into this world.
Run free, sweet Ryan—into warm sunshine, endless adventures, and peace beyond measure.
