Columbiana January 19, 2008 -Robert Ray Stewart, age 82, formerly of East Friend Street died at 4:00 a.m. Saturday in the Caprice Health Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Feb. 28, 1925 in Alliance, son of Ray Dwight and Olive Pearl Bable Stewart.
He had lived in Columbiana since 1952 coming from East Fairfield OH. He was employed for 19 years at Pacific International Express (P.I.E.) at the Richfield, Ohio terminal and a member of the Teamster Local 24, Akron. Bob was awarded "The Million Mile Safe Driving Award" from P.I.E. He drove for several other large trucking companies before starting his years with P.I.E.
Bob was a lifetime member of the Youngstown Chapter Model T Ford club serving as President in 1982. He was a former member of the early Tri-State Antique Car Club joining in 1969 and also a former member of AACC, Model T Ford Club International and Vintage Ford Club of America. He and his wife Doris spent one week each summer putting their 1924 Model T Ford on the trailer behind the pickup to travel with club friends to distant parts of the states for week long tours planned by members. Getting to drive his Model T for a week in new places was a great joy to him. He also did some touring in their 1931 Model A Ford. Labor Day weekend was spent enjoying the Ohio Model T Jamboree held in different parts of the state each year. He also belonged to the Beaver Creek Canal Association.
Bob was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Washingtonville.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Jean Hart whom he married June 29, 1947; three daughters, Sandra (Ray) Crittenden of Cornelius, NC, Linda Stewart of Youngstown, Mona (William) Barger of Canfield; a son, Robert Allen (Juanita) Stewart of Leetonia; eight grandchildren, Christy (Jeff) Mocny, Amy Crittenden, Cara Crittenden, Justin Barger, Melissa Barger, William Barger, Chris (Brooke) Stewart, and Barry (Roseanne) Stewart; and four great-grandchildren, Ezra, Gwenna, Bradley, and William Stewart.
He was preceded in death by a half sister, Norma Kessler and granddaughter, Tanya Bishop.
Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home with the Pastor William Medford officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbiana Cemetery.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorial tributes may be made to the church memorial fund or Hospice of Southern Care.
