Robert W. Hum

Columbiana – Robert W. Hum, 87, of Columbiana passed away Tuesday evening, August 23, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Care Center.

Mr. Hum was born October 1, 1928 in Mansfield, a son of Delmar and Irene Bell Hum and had lived in this area most of his life.

Bob enjoyed four years of football, basketball and track during his high school years graduating from Columbiana High School in 1946. During his senior year he was on the basketball team that was runner-up for the state championship with Bill Newell and Rich Berryman. The following year the team was state champions.

With Coach John Cabas’ help, Bob received a four year football scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh graduating with a BS in Education in 1950. He then returned to Columbiana and taught history.

Bob was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War and served two years. He then taught in Somerset, PA and worked on his masters degree at the University of Pittsburgh. When he returned to Columbiana he served as the first principal of the newly constructed Joshua Dixon Elementary School where his administrative duties also included bus driving and operating the cafeteria. He served as assistant football coach and assistant basketball coach.

Bob was also a salesman for more than 30 years for Scott Foresman and Co. which sold school textbooks to school districts in Ohio and California. He had been a member of the Columbiana Fire Department. He was also a member of the Allen Lodge #267 F&AM in Columbiana, the Scottish Rite, Shrine and the Escondido Lodge in California.

He is survived by his wife, the former Melissa D. Kovac, whom he married December 24, 1950; two daughters, Melinda J. Hum of San Diego, CA and Jenifer Vidra of Oceanside, CA; a son, Robert W. (Margo) Hum, II of Columbiana; a brother, James (Wilma) Hum of Columbiana; and five grandchildren, Kathleen M. Hum, Robert W. Hum III, James F. Hum, Joseph G. Hum and Stephanie A. Vidra.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Stacey.

Friends will be received from 10:00-11:30 am Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana. Services will follow at 11:30 am Tuesday at the funeral home with Reverend Charles Ready officiating. Burial will be in Columbiana Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by Benjamin Firestone Post of the American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to Allen Lodge #276 F.&A.M.
