Listen to Obituary

Robert "Bob" Mongillo, 75, of Columbiana, passed away at home on July 15, surrounded by his wife of 51 years, Margo, and his four daughters, Meghan, Monica, Emily, and Elyse. He took his final breath as his wife and daughters prayed over him.

Bob was born on July 11, 1951, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Peter Louis and Dorinda Troiano Mongillo.

He was raised on Portman Avenue on Pittsburgh's North Side alongside his brother, Louis, and sister, Diane. He spent his childhood playing ball "down at the field" and wagering on games of pinochle. He graduated from North Catholic High School in 1969.

Bob met his bride, Margo, while they were both attending Duquesne University. Margo managed the football team on which Bob—known then as "Bobby"—was a standout player for the Duquesne Gridiron Dukes. Nicknamed the "60-Minute Man," he played both fullback on offense and linebacker on defense for the 1973 National Club Championship team.

It was Bob's dream to raise a family on a large piece of land. Shortly after marrying Margo in 1975, they moved to Columbiana and purchased six acres where they built the home in which he lived for the rest of his life.

Together they raised four daughters—Meghan, Monica, Emily, and Elyse. Bob was a devoted father who taught his girls not only how to play sports, but also the lifelong values of family, honesty, respect, and hard work.

Every day felt like Christmas at the Mongillo house. Bob and Margo frequently welcomed family and friends into their home, filling it with delicious food, laughter, and love. Bob was known for preparing elaborate Italian Sunday dinners and memorable Thanksgiving feasts, often making so many side dishes that at least one would inevitably be forgotten.

Each summer, Bob loaded the family into the station wagon and headed to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, for a two-week vacation. Days were spent biking, walking, playing tennis and beach volleyball, and swimming in the ocean—a tradition the family cherished for decades.

Despite living in Columbiana since 1975, Bob never lost his Pittsburgh accent or his love for the Steel City. Whenever anyone asked where he was from, his answer was simply, "Pittsburgh." He loved cheering—and occasionally booing—for the Steelers and Pirates. When his daughters were young, he would spend game days adjusting the rabbit-ear antenna on the family television in hopes of tuning in the Steelers. He liked to joke that it was always snowing in Pittsburgh as he watched games through a fuzzy screen.

Bob spent 41 years with Andersen Windows, rising through the ranks to become a Regional Manager before retiring in 2013. Retirement suited him well. For the next 13 years, he and Margo were inseparable. He enjoyed golfing and fishing trips with his friends, but nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his grandchildren. Bob and Margo frequently traveled to Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Louisville to visit Hugo, Mila, Rocco, Dominico, Vincenzo, Jacob Jr., Symone, and Micah.

Life will not be the same without Bob. He leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, generosity, laughter, and unwavering commitment to family. We will honor his memory by finding joy in life's simple moments and by creating the kind of loving, welcoming home that he and Margo built together.

Bob is survived by his wife, Margo Hess Mongillo; his daughters, Meghan Mongillo Coffaro, her husband Adam, and their sons Rocco, Domenico, and Vincenzo; Monica Mongillo Pogula, her husband Naveen, and their children Hugo and Mila; Emily Mongillo McClinton, her husband, and their children Symone and Micah; and Elyse Mongillo Sada, her husband Jacob, and their son, Jacob Jr.

He is also survived by his beloved chocolate Labrador, Sadie; his brother, Louis Mongillo (Susan); his sister, Diane Mongillo Madia (Mark); his brothers-in-law, Greg Hess (Linda) and Rod Hess (Janet); and his nieces and nephews, Paul, Jason, Lisa, Peter, Jennifer, Kelsie, Aubrie, Kristofer, and Olivia.
