Columbiana - October 5, 2006 - Robert William Barnes, Jr., age 73, of 1229 SR 164, died Thurday at 10:21 a.m. at the Salem Community Hospital after being stricken at his home.
Mr. Barnes was born January 10, 1933 in Waynesboro, PA, a son of the late Robert W. and Ann Sullivan Barnes, Sr. and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a graduate of Columbiana High School and played on the 1948 State Basketball Championship Team for Columbiana.
He was employed as a contract supervisor for the US Government, Department of Navy for several years, retiring in 1998. Prior to that, he was in the insurance business in Columbiana for a number of years. He was also retired from the US Marines where he had served over nine years.
He was a member of the Zion Hill Church of the Brethren, the Benjamin Firestone Post #290, American Legion of Columbiana and the DAV of Cleveland.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth B. Sparkes, whom he married November 20, 1954; three sons, Robert (Debbie) Barnes of Boston, MA, Todd (Becky) Barnes of Orange Park, FL, and Steven (Jenny) Barnes of New Philadelphia, OH; four sisters, Mrs. Willys (Sandra) Smith and Susan White, both of Columbiana, Mrs. Larry (Patricia) Walters of Leetonia, and Mrs. Richard (Dora Lee) Treleven of Salem; six brothers, Ronald Barnes of Boardman, Richard (Ann) Barnes of Asatula, FL, Randall H. (Mary) Barnes and Russell (Diane) Barnes, both of Columbiana, Roger (Diana) Barnes of Galion, OH and Michael Barnes of Reston, VA; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Warrick-Kummer Funeral Home, Columbiana with the Reverend John Bartholomew officiating. Burial will be in Zion Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday. Material tributes may take the form of a donation to the Columbiana EMS.
