Columbiana-May 2, 2009-Richard E. Perkins, 78, of 546 W. Park Ave. died at 8:00 a.m. Saturday at Essex of Salem II.
Mr. Perkins was born November 8, 1930 in Lisbon, a son of George L. and Mary M. Bell Perkins and had lived in this area all of his life. Richard was a draftsman for NRM, Bliss and Electric Furnace in Salem and L.W. Nash in East Palestine. He was a 1948 graduate of Columbiana High School where he was a member of the 1947 State Championship Basketball Team. Richard was inducted into the Columbiana High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. He was a Christian by faith and a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, the former Carol G. Burton, whom he married December 10, 1949; a daughter and her husband Linda and Melvin Winters of Columbiana; two sons, Michael Perkins of Columbiana and Burton Perkins and his wife Heather Logan of Bainbridge Island, Washington; and five grandchildren, Meaghan and David Mullen, Matt Winters, Amanda Winters, Anthony Melone and Nicholas Melone
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gretchen Marino and two brothers, Ronald and Gary Perkins.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana with the Reverend James Beach officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial will be in Columbiana Cemetery.
