Poland – Rand David Williams, 85, passed away Thursday afternoon, August 25, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
Mr. Williams was born January 14, 1931 in Youngstown, a son of the late Benjamin F. and Delilah Giering Williams and lived in the Beaver Township area all of his life.
A 1949 graduate of North Lima High School, Rand served his nation in both the Ohio National Guard and the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force, he was an honors graduate of both the J-47 and the J-48 jet engine schools. He then worked for 30 years in the Youngstown Sheet and Tube and later, LTV, starting as a journeyman machinist and later for many years as a general foreman of the garage and locomotive shops at the both the Campbell and Brier Hill Works. After retiring from LTV, he then worked at TIP Tools in Canfield as a salesman and compressor repairman. He was a guy who could fix just about everything; from jet engines to steam and diesel locomotives to ’47 Studebakers.
Rand was a longtime member of Calvary United Methodist Church, North Lima, and served as chairman of its trustees and was very involved in the activities of the Disciples Class. Among Rand’s many interests were a passion for fishing, having caught fish from Alaska to Florida. He also had interests in gardening and traveling, especially enjoying various bus excursions in his later years. He was happiest though, when spending time during get-togethers and family card games. He was a member of Benjamin Firestone Post #290 American Legion, Columbiana.
He is survived by his wife, the former Carmen Ruth Searth, whom he married July 13, 1952; three sons, Mark (Marnie) Williams of Canfield, Lee (Charlene) Williams of Poland, and Dale (Patricia) Williams of Papillion, NE; nine grandchildren, Melanie, Jennifer, Drake, Alex, Christina, Stephen, Thomas, Amy, and Jonathan; and a great granddaughter, Marleigh.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter in law, Deborah Williams; four sisters, Virginia Myers, Margaret Snyder, Mildred Welton, and Janet O’Neil; two brothers, Roger Williams and Reed Williams; and a nephew, Richard Roshon.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2016 at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana with the Reverend Renae Meggitt officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, North Lima where military honors will be accorded by the Benjamin Firestone Post American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Monday.
