COLUMBIANA – Ralph C. Fitzsimons, 89, of Columbiana, formerly of New Waterford, died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at Essex of Salem II.
Mr. Fitzsimons was born January 1, 1926 in Rogers, a son of the late Raymond J. and Elsa Longshore Fitzsimons and had lived in the area all of his life.
He had been employed as a postal carrier for United States Postal Service for 33 years. Prior to that he worked for Franklin Furniture, Columbiana and as a farmer. He served as a corporal in the US Army during WW II serving in Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Battle of the Bulge.
Ralph was a member of the New Waterford Presbyterian Church where he had served as a church elder and Sunday school superintendent and the Benjamin Firestone Post 290 American Legion. He was also a past member of the New Waterford Lions Club, had served on the Clarkson Cemetery Board, and had been a Cub Scout leader. Ralph also played in the former Rube Band in New Waterford, was a part of Billie Bob's Camping Group and a huge antique car buff.
He is survived by his wife, the former, Lucille Yeager, whom he married June 22, 1946; two daughters, Carolyn (William J.) McQuiston of North East, MD and Ann Fitzsimons of Cuyahoga Falls and three grandchildren, Sean (Erica) McQuiston, KC McQuiston and Georgianne Davis.
A son, David Lee Fitzsimons and a brother, Walter Fitzsimmons preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the New Waterford Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. Stephen Cramer and the Reverend Dr. Meta Cramer officiating. Burial will follow in Clarkson Cemetery where the Tri-State Burial Group will accord military honors.
Friends may call at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana from 5-8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior at the church on Saturday.
