Columbiana - Patrick S. "Red" Mele Jr., 76, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Boardman Campus.
He was born January 24, 1933 in Youngstown, a son of Patrick S. and Mary Sevyak Mele, Sr. He served America honorably in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War. After returning from the service, he completed his education and graduated from Chaney High School where he was recognized for his artistic talents. He attended Junior College.
Pat worked for various railroads, including the P. & L.E. and CSX Corporation, from where he retired. He was a lifelong area resident. He enjoyed watching sports with his son, Chris, and attending sporting events. He played baseball and basketball in the Marines and later played on local baseball and softball teams as well as local golf leagues. He was proud that he was a scratch golfer which was stated in Golf Digest as most improved golfer.
He will be sadly missed by his son, Chris Mele and daughter in law, Sandy and his daughter, Susan (Curt) Cox. He also leaves three brothers, Richard (Leda) Mele, Vincent (Irene) Mele, and Robert Remedio; three sisters, Carol (Mike) Benya, Marie Taafe, Bernadette (Harry) Gardner and a host of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Marchionda and two brothers, Phillip and John.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana, with Pastor Kari Lankford officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.
Patrick's family wishes to thank the nurses and staff in the intensive care unity of St. Elizabeth Medical Center for their compassion and kindness during this difficult time.
