Negley – Opal Jacqueline Gumbel, age 88, died Thursday, July 27, 2017, at her residence.
She was born May 4, 1929 in Mannington, WV, a daughter of the late Albert and Erma Kendall Starkey and had lived in the area all her life.
Mrs. Gumbel had worked in the kitchen at Rogers Community Auction and was a member of the Lake Mount Church of Christ, New Waterford. She enjoyed crocheting and was very proud of her county blue ribbons. She loved to pass out her afghans, spending time with her family, having Bonnie’s day with her friends and especially being a grandmother.
Her husband, Thomas Albert Gumbel, whom she married June 26, 1948 preceded her in death, June 20, 1999.
Opel is survived by her son, Thomas O. (Sherrie) Gumbel of Negley; a daughter, Patricia Johnson of Columbiana; a sister, Janet Burson of East Palestine; three grandchildren, Danna Rae (Rick) Smith, Billy A. Lucas, and Crystal (Donald) Gumbel-Shade; her great grandson and the light of her life, Cooper Smith; as well as, Paige and Cole.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Hurst; her brother Robert Starkey; and a son-in-law, Dennis Johnson.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana. Burial will follow in the East Carmel Cemetery, Rogers.
Friends may call from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
