Salem - May 30, 2005 - Norma E. Woods, 86, of 927 Park Avenue, formerly of Washingtonville, died at 8:50 a.m. Monday at her home.
Mrs. Woods was born June 30, 1918 in New Bedford, MA, a daughter of Seraphine Philip and Helen Agnes Cook Jason. She had lived in Salem since 2003 when she moved from Washingtonville where she had resided for 56 years. She served in the US Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer during WW II. She had been employed as a seamstress at Ort Furniture of Salem for many years, retiring in 1980.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Washingtonville, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Lutheran Church Women. She served on the Leetonia Library Board for 17 years and was a past president of the Leetonia-Washingtonville PTA. She had been a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and was active in Band Boosters.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 131 of Leetonia and volunteered of the Red Cross Blood Drive in Columbiana, Leetonia, and Washingtonville. She also worked for the Mahoning County Board of Elections for many years.
Her husband, Joseph E. Woods, whom she married March 9, 1946 died May 3, 2002.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Barbara) Fennema, Mrs. Charles (Marjorie) Burtnett, and Mrs. Randy (Kathy) McGath, all of Salem; a son, J. Edward (Pattie) Woods of Memphis, TN; a sister, Mrs. Donald (Barbara) Chase of Fairhaven, MA; two brothers, Chester (Lea) Jason of Fairhaven, MA and Philip (Mimi) Jason of Florida; ten grandchildren, Erin Woods and Melissa Woods, both of Memphis, TN; John Fennema with the U.S. Marines at Parris Island, SC, Sarah Fennema and Jason Fennema, both of Salem, Daniel (Danielle Vancura) Fennema of Ada, OH, Allison Burtnett of Kent, OH, Charlie Burtnett of Salem, and Joe McGath and Michael McGath, both of Leetonia; and one great granddaughter, Haley Gaither of Salem.
A sister, Thelma Corderio and a brother, Logan Jason are also deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia, with the Reverend William Medford officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Salem. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Hospice of the Valley or the Trinity Lutheran Church.
