Nancy (Bortner) Evans

Columbiana - Nancy Evans, age 79, of Columbiana, passed away with her family by her side, on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Hospice House, Poland.

She was born on September 8, 1945, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Brelih Bortner.

Nancy was a graduate of Canfield High School, received her bachelor’s degree from Kent State University, and earned her master’s degree in education from Youngstown State University.  Nancy worked as a teacher for the Columbiana Exempted Village Schools where she retired after 30 years.  Nancy was currently a member of Greenford Christian Church and was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church Columbiana where she had served as an Elder and taught Sunday School with her husband for many years.  She enjoyed socializing with her “Retired Teachers” group, spending time outside watching the birds, and relaxing on her raft in the swimming pool.  Mostly she enjoyed spending time with her family.  She was an amazing wife, mom, nana, and grammy in the grey house.  She loved playing cards and board games and especially loved reading to her grandchildren.  Nancy always hosted the family gatherings where the family had the pleasure of enjoying her homemade meals and made-from-scratch desserts.  She will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 51 years, David Evans; two daughters, Jennifer (Brian) Newman of Jefferson Hills, PA, and Kimberlee (David) Shirley of Louisville, OH; four grandchildren, Tyler (Heather Wuenschell) Newman, Evan Shirley, Elliot Shirley, and Elizabeth Shirley; a great grandchild, Lexi Newman and her beloved sister, Linda (Neil) Johnson of Ardmore, OK.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Anne Ezar in 2022.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm and again on Friday, April 18, 2025, from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana.

Services will be held on Friday, at the funeral home, at 11:00 am with Pastor John Bush officiating.

Burial will take place at Columbiana Cemetery, Columbiana.

Memorial donations may be made in Nancy’s memory to the Outdoor Learning Center at Joshua Dixon Elementary School which will be located right outside the classroom where Nancy taught for many years.  Please make checks payable to: Memorial of Nancy Evans, 42201 Edward Circle, Columbiana, OH 44408.
