East Palestine, OH – Matilda J. “Tillie” Benkowski, 88, formerly of Rochester, PA and Ambridge, PA, died at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at the Covington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Benkowski was born June 29, 1927 in Beaver Falls, PA, a daughter of the late John Breit and the late Elizabeth Breit Mantch and had lived in East Palestine 5 years, coming from Rochester, PA.
She was a homemaker and had worked for several years at Prudential Insurance in Beaver Falls. Tillie was a member of Good Samaritan Catholic Church, Ambridge, PA and belonged to the Christian Mothers at St. Stanislaus, Ambridge, PA and was active with the Parent Teachers Guild.
Tillie enjoyed baking, knitting, sewing and spending time with her family. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren.
Her husband, Theodore N. Benkowski, preceded her in death January 5, 2009.
She is survived by a daughter, Georgiana Gallaher of State College, PA; a son, Richard (Barbara) Benkowski of East Palestine, OH; and two grandchildren, Krystin Benkowski of Lansing, MI and Mark Benkowski of Pittsburgh, PA.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Mrkonja and Dorothy “Jean” Pinkerton and by her son in law, J. Kirk Gallaher.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at Good Samaritan Catholic Church, 725 Glenwood Avenue, Ambridge, PA. PLEASE MEET AT THE CHURCH ON Saturday. Burial will follow in Good Samaritan Cemetery, Ambridge. Friends may call at the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home, 60 W. Martin St. East Palestine, OH from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2015 and at the church one hour prior to services on Saturday.
The family would like to thank the kind, loving hands at Covington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center that cared for her during her illness.
