Mary "Rita" Kane

Mary "Rita" Kane, age 91, of Cortland, died on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Life Care Center of Hilton Head, SC. She was born on February 3, 1925 in Chicago Illinois, a daughter of the late George L. Cassidy and the late Alice Mabel King Cassidy. Rita was a founding member and a faithful parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother as well as an essential asset to her husband's business, Kane Lumber Co. for over 40 years. She enjoyed playing cards, music, dancing, and loved traveling. Mostly, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Her husband of 67 years, Owen H. Kane Sr., whom she married on September 20, 1945, preceded her in death on August 18, 2013. She will be greatly missed by her three sons, Thomas G. (Luanne) Kane of Stafford, VA, Gerard F. "Gerry" (Lynda) Kane of Fowler and John C. Kane of Montclair, NJ; two daughters, Karen L. (Tom) Freed of Olmsted Falls, OH and Mary R. (Robert) Kuchinow of Hilton Head Island, SC; and a daughter in-law, Mary Lou Kane of McDonough, GA. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Rita was preceded in death by a son, Owen H. Kane Jr. and her sister LaVergne M. Thornton. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church on Friday, September 2, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the church with Msgr. Thomas L. Snyderwine officiating. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Owen, at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Robert Catholic Church, 4659 Niles Cortland Rd. NE, Cortland, OH 44410.
