East Palestine-Loren Daniel Sutherin, 94, formerly of East Palestine, died at 2:00 am Monday, May 13, 2013 at Grace Woods Senior Living in Salem.
Mr. Sutherin was born March 20, 1919 in East Palestine, a son of the late Merrill and Mary Garrett Sutherin and had lived in the area all of his life.
Loren had been a shipper for Republic Steel in Youngstown for 30 years retiring in 1981.
Loren was the oldest member of the First Church of Christ of East Palestine where he had served as deacon, trustee and choir member. He was a member of the George F. McBane Post #31 American Legion and the Edward L. McGuckin Post #4579 VFW both in East Palestine. He was also a life member of the DAV #229 in Salem. Loren was a former Unity Ruritan member, RSVP member and helped with Meals on Wheels. He had also served on the Columbiana County Board of Elections as a poll worker.
Loren served in the US Army during World War II and was wounded in France receiving the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Charlotte Wellendorf, whom he married February 18, 1948; three sons, Merrill (Fannie Sills) Sutherin of Chicago, IL, Daniel (Patricia) Sutherin of East Palestine and Mark (Darlene) Sutherin of Guilford Lake; twelve grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Thelma Hostetter, Mildred Dugan and Lucille Woods; three brothers, James Sutherin, Loren's twin, Lester Sutherin and Merrill Sutherin; and a great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, May 17, 2013 at the First Church of Christ of East Palestine with his pastor, Mr. Robert Helbeck officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 pm Thursday at the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home, East Palestine and 10-11 am Friday at the church. Burial will follow in East Carmel Cemetery where the East Palestine Honor Guard will accord military honors.
Contributions in memory of Loren may be made to the church memorial fund.
