Leetonia - December 17, 2004 - J. Leland Helt, 95, formerly of Butcher Road, Leetonia, died at 3:40 a.m. Friday at The Sanctuary At Tuttle Crossing in Dublin.

Mr. Helt was born September 20, 1909 in Lisbon, a son of John F. and Nellie B. Hickling Helt and had lived in the Leetonia area since 1924. He served in the U.S. Army 158th Combat Engineers during WW II.

He was an independent insurance agent and owned and operated the former Helt Insurance Agency in Leetonia for 21 years, retiring in 1977. Prior to that, he had been a clerk at the U.S. Post Office in Leetonia for 29 years.

He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the former Leetonia Kiwanis Club. He was a 50 year member of Leetonia Lodge #401 F. & A.M., and was a life member of Joe Williams Post #131 American Legion and the York Drexler Post #5532 VFW of Washingtonville. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and had served on the Leetonia Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years. His wife, the former Margaret Fuhrman, whom he married August 23, 1941 died January 25, 1989.

He is survived by two daughters, Peggy Wolffrum of Bowie, MD and Marylou Hill of Dublin, OH; two sisters, Betty Helt of Columbiana and Marian Holloway of Leetonia; three grandchildren, Mindy Hill Allen, Tracy and Todd Wolffrum; and two great grandchildren, Amanda and Lauren Allen; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Paul Ted Helt is also deceased.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Leetonia with Pastor Kari Lankford, of the church officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia and at the church one hour prior to the services on Tuesday. Material tributes may take the form of a donation to the church memorial fund.
