Leetonia-October 28, 2011-Larry Gene Shimer, 48, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday, October 28, 2011, at the home of his parents, following a lengthy illness.

Larry was born November 9, 1962 in Salem, a son of the late Raymond G. Shimer, Jr. and June Brunner Shimer Herron.

Mr. Shimer held a Bachelors of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from Youngstown State University. Larry resided in Livonia, Michigan and was a senior project engineer for 22 years for Lear Automotive Division, Detroit where he helped develop the Ford GT. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Leetonia. Larry was an avid Cincinnati Bengals and Detroit Red Wings fan. He loved fishing, hunting and target shooting.

He is survived by his parents, John and June Herron of Leetonia; his sister, Karen (David) Ray of Leetonia; his brother, Danny (Susan) Shimer of Milford, MI; his nieces and nephews; Kelsie (Nick) Markijohn and Darren Ray all of Leetonia and Matthew and Jacob Shimer of Milford, MI; his "Michigan parents", Pete and Sandy Caprara of Livonia, MI; and his "second brother", Lee Unkefer of Columbiana.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Leetonia with Pastor Kari Lankford and Clarence Mansfield, Minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Columbiana Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 pm Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry's memory may be made to Alliance Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice, 885 S. Sawburg Ave. #106 Alliance, OH 44601, St. Paul's Brick Restoration Fund or HASTEN (Health and Salvation to Every Nation).
