Larry "Coach B" Baughman

Columbiana – Larry Baughman, affectionately known as “Coach B”, age 79, of Columbiana, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Hospice House, Poland.

He was born on April 12, 1945, in East Liverpool, OH, son of the late Russell and Ella Wilson Baughman.

Larry was a graduate of Wellsville High School and received his honorary diploma from Columbiana High School in 2022.  He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War before returning home to work as a wemr for General Motors in Lordstown for 37 ½ years, retiring in 2006.  Larry was a member of the American Legion Benjamin Firestone Post #290 in Columbiana, Washingtonville York Drexler Post #5532 VFW, UAW #1714 and sat on the Firestone Park board.

“Coach B” began his career in coaching in 1968 as head coach for the Little Clippers football team and later as league commissioner.  He is a longtime member of the Columbiana Boosters Association where he served as its president on multiple occasions.  He was instrumental in raising funds for athletic facilities and equipment that was needed.  In 1986, “Coach B” was appointed to head coach of the Columbiana Clippers freshman football team and in 1989 was named defensive coordinator until stepping down in 2013.  Throughout his career, he served in various athletic positions including his current position as assistant athletic director, performed basketball and baseball coaching duties, served as a basketball referee for 33 years and was the past coordinator of the Penn-Ohio State Line Football Classic. Larry received the AFLAC assistant coach of the year award in 2002, was inducted into the Columbiana Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 and was honored in 2014 at the 17th annual Ohio High School Football Coaches Association with its “30-Year Coaching Award.”  He had a passion for his community and a special place in his heart for the many student athletes he had the privilege of coaching over the years.  When he was not dedicating his time to athletics, Larry enjoyed relaxing at his cottage on Berlin Lake and spending time on his boat.  Mostly, Larry enjoyed the company of his family and close friends.  He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Kirkbride Baughman, whom he married on January 8, 1967; his son, Doug (Leia) Baughman of Ravenna, OH; daughter, Jennie (Tim) Passmore of Columbiana; sister, Judy Ritchie of East Rochester, OH; six grandchildren, Haylee Baughman, Shelby Baughman, Amber (JP) Slider, Adam (Kinsey) Passmore, Abbie Passmore, and Andrew Passmore, as well as seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Wiggs.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 15, 2024, from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana.

Services will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at 11:00 am, at the funeral home with Pastor Jan Winnale officiating.

Burial will take place at the Columbiana Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Benjamin Firestone Post #290 American Legion Honor Guard.

The family is asking all who would like to participate to kindly wear red and white or Clippers attire on the day of the service.

Memorial donations may be made in Larry’s memory to either: Columbiana Stadium Restoration Fund or Columbiana Athletic Hall of Fame.  Checks must be made out to the Columbiana Athletic Boosters, 700 Columbiana Waterford Rd., Columbiana, OH 44408.
