Columbiana - LaClair William (Slim) Nelson, 90, of 181 North Vine Street, passed away at 7:20 a.m. Friday at Salem Community Hospital, where he had been a patient for several hours. Born July 8, 1914 at Chalk Hill, PA, the son of William P. and Oina I. (Burke) Nelson. A 1937 graduate of Uniontown High School, Uniontown, PA, and moved to Columbiana the same year. He was a member of Jerusalem Church since 1938, where he served as Deacon, was a member of Council and served on the Board of Elders. Mr. Nelson worked for B&N Transportation from September 9, 1939 until Commercial Motor Freight bought the company January 1, 1959. He retired from Commercial Motor Freight in October 1976. He was credited with driving about four million miles. He joined the Retired Teamsters Local #377 in 1977. After serving as Vice President, he served as President for 12 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Roberta Olive Conrad, whom he married, October 28, 1937 three daughters, Catherine Oina (Nelson) Justice and her husband, D. Eugene Justice, Sharon Roberta Nelson and Karen Ann Nelson and her fiancAC.e, Anthony Bernard, all of Columbiana; a sister, Kathleen C. (Nelson) Covert of Columbiana; a brother, W. Hamilton Nelson of Denver, CO; six grandchildren, Barbara Jean (Justice) Dattilio, Susan Marie (Justice) Treep, John Nelson Caplinger, Sara Roberta Caplinger, Shaun LaClair Randolph, Heather Ann (Randolph) Schloesser and two great-grandchildren, Lucas J. and Jacob J. Dattilio. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Mary (Paul) Nelson, and Curtin A. Burke and Margaret (Rohlf) Burke; his parents, William P. Nelson and Oina I. (Burke) Nelson; three brothers, Warren A. (Bo) Nelson, Charles E. Nelson and Duane H. Nelson; and a sister, Alice A. (Nelson) Bush. The funeral will be held at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 415 South Main Street, Columbiana, OH, 11:00 a.m. Monday where friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Pastor W. David H. Conrad will officiate. Interment service will follow at the chapel in Columbiana Cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Jerusalem Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
