Columbiana - Lt. Col. Kenneth E Gould, 76, of Columbiana and Lakewood Ranch, FL, died Monday, January 26, 2015 at Hospice House, Poland.
He was born October 5, 1938 in Newton, MA, a son of the late Alexander and Jessie Adams Gould. He began his Air Force career with pilot training in 1959. During his early years as an Air Force pilot he flew mid-air refueling tankers out of Dow Air Force Base in Maine, Stead Air Force base in Nevada and March Air Force Base in CA. As an Air Force Captain, he flew numerous combat missions in and out of Vietnam.
After additional assignments and promotions, Lt. Col. Gould completed his career with the Air Force Reserves stationed in Youngstown, OH. During his tenure in Youngstown, he served as Squadron Commander and in 1984 helped lead his unit to achieve the highly prestigious Grover Loening Trophy which is given in recognition of superior achievement. His flying career includes over 1800 sorties and in excess of 10,200 hours flying a variety of aircraft including refueling tankers, tactical fighter jets, and strategic airlift transport planes. He retired from the US Air Force in Feb 1994 but continued to work as a Federal Air Reserve Technician as Chief of Standardized Evaluation. In October 1999, Ken retired and moved to Lakewood Ranch FL with his loving wife Kathy Oliver Gould, whom he married February 17, 1967.
He is also survived by two daughters, Dawn (Jim) Ewing of Columbiana and Melissa (Chris) Brands of Louisville, KY; a son, Kip (Tina) Bolon of North Canton; a sister, Betty Youlden of Buzzards Bay, MA; and nine grandchildren, Jarrod Bolon, Taylor Bolon, Tanner Ewing, Madison Ewing, Joshua Tisone, Joey Tisone, Jacob Tisone, Aubrey Brands, and Nick Brands.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana with American Legion Chaplain Ken Rambo officiating. Burial will follow in Columbiana Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by Benjamin Firestone Post American Legion Honor Guard.
