Columbiana - Joseph A. Chaplow, age 72, of Columbiana, died on Friday, March 15, 2024 at his home.

He was born on January 2, 1952, in Salem, son of the late Glenn Chaplow and Sarah Gorby Chaplow Smith.

Joseph attended school in East Palestine until his senior year when he moved to Columbiana, he was lovingly accepted by both graduating classes throughout his life. During his time in high school, he was a record setting shot putter and his record stood for years, until it was broken by a student he coached. Joseph served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific, after an honorable discharge from the Navy he obtained a master’s degree from Kent State and continued his connection with the military and worked as Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with the V.A.

Joseph had a passion for music and art, he especially loved the Beatles and was involved with numerous bands throughout his life, and he will continue to sing in heaven because, “big men sing real loud.” He was well known as “The Voice of the Columbiana High School Marching band.” Joeseph enjoyed reliving his childhood through old movies and stories from his past. He was unique, 1 of 1, and had an ability for human connection that was unparalleled. Joseph was a loving husband, father and a dedicated professional.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Linda Justison Chaplow, whom he married on October 12, 1991; six children, Nour (Haytham) Osman, formerly known as Julie Anne Chaplow , Jonathan (Lauren) Chaplow, Richard Chaplow, Matthew (Jaime) Traywick, Sarah (Scott) Garlough and Zachary (Juliet) Chaplow; 24 grandchildren, many great grandchildren; a brother, Raymond Chaplow of TX and a sister, Glenda Atkins of VA.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana.

Services will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, at 6:00 pm at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana, with Pastor Cindy Figley officiating.

Military honors will be accorded by the Benjamin Firestone Post #290 American Legion Honor Guard

Burial will take place at New Waterford Cemetery at a later date.
