James E. “Stewy” Stewart, age 88, of Salem, died on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at his home.
He was born on February 16, 1927, in Salem, the son of the late Culver J. and Emily Quigley Stewart.
Stewy was a graduate of both Leetonia High School and The Ohio State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during WWII and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Leetonia. Stewy had worked for the United States Post office for forty years where he had served as the Postmaster in Leetonia from 1962-1975. He was a lifetime member of the Leetonia American Legion -Joe Williams Post #131 where he had served as treasurer for many years; he was also a lifetime member of the Washingtonville V.F.W and the Leetonia Sportsman club.
Stewy enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre. He also enjoyed the outdoors. He loved fishing and hunting and always looked forward to his annual hunting trips out west, as well as his trips to the hunting camp in Morgantown, WV. Mostly, he enjoyed spending time with his family as well as his best friend of eighty years, Ike Beilhart.
His wife, Betty Sue Ousley Stewart, whom he married on February 16, 1990, preceded him in death on May 21, 2013.
He is survived by three daughters, Carrie E. Savage of Washingtonville, Christine L. (Michael) Ecrement of Hanoverton and Anne L. (Dave) Mathey of Leetonia; two sons, James B. (Bonnie) Stewart of Leetonia and Daniel L. (Michelle) Stewart of Austintown; two step-daughters, Janet Sue (Joe) Watson of NC and Teresa L. Adams of Columbiana; two step-sons, Andy (Laura) Ousley of FL and Timothy (Dee) Ousley of KY and a sister, Anita Gross of Fairborn. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Lindsay (Josh) Yencha, Erin (Chris) Lordi and Laura Savage; seven grandsons, Jonathon, Adam, Kristofor and Sean Stewart, David and Scott Savage and Ryan Wolford; a step-granddaughter, Kantele (Rick) Rouan; two great granddaughters and five great grandsons.
Stewy was preceded in death by his first wife, Joanne Stewart and by a son in-law, Walt Savage.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Leetonia. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
Military honors will be rendered by the Salem Honor Guard.
Burial will be at the Oakdale Cemetery, Leetonia.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia.
