East Palestine - James S. "Red" McCarthy, 91, formerly of Grandview Avenue, East Palestine, died at 11:47 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2015 at the Salem Regional Medical Center.
Mr. McCarthy was born November 26, 1923 in Salem, a son of the late Rupert F. and Helen B. McCauley McCarthy and had lived here all of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He was a master carpenter and home builder and owned and operated J. S. McCarthy Construction for many years. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and was Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, East Palestine. He was a member and past Quartermaster of the Edward L. McGuckin Post #4579 of East Palestine and was a life member of George F. McBane Post #31 of the American Legion. He was also a member of the East Palestine Eagles Lodge and a life member of the Moose Lodge, East Palestine. He also served in the East Palestine Honor Guard for many years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Donna J. Woods and his second wife, the former Dorothy J. McCready Istnick; a brother Richard McCarthy and a sister, Jane McCarthy Snider.
He is survived by a stepdaughter, Cathy (Michael D.) Donadio of Howland; a stepson, Rick (Mary Ann) Istnick of East Palestine; five step grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, East Palestine with Father Christopher Cicero officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the East Palestine Honor Guard. Interment will be in Glenview Cemetery, East Palestine.
Friends may call at the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home, East Palestine from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
