Columbiana, OH-November 10, 2009-Jack S. McCoy, 86, formerly of Columbiana-Lisbon Road, died at 4:10 a.m. Tuesday at Hawthorne Woods in Washington, PA.
Mr. McCoy was born January 2, 1923 in Leetonia, a son of William "Del" and Elizabeth Wilkinson McCoy and had lived in Columbiana County most of his life.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp in Utah before joining the US Army. He served honorably during World War II where he was a Prisoner of War for fourteen months. He was captured in Italy and was transported by rail to Hammerstein Germany to Stalog IIB. Jack received the American Campaign Medal; European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze stars; Good Conduct Ribbon; and World War II Victory Medal. He participated in the battle of Naples-Foggia and the campaign for Rome Arno. Jack was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal.
He was a labor foreman for J.D. Fowler Construction Company, Youngstown for 29 years retiring in 1983.
He attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Leetonia, and was a member of the Joe Williams Post #131 American Legion, a life member of the York Drexler Post #5532 VFW, a member of the Ohio Chapter #122 D.A.V. in Youngstown and the Steel Valley Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War in Youngstown. He was also a member of the Leetonia Sportsmen's Club.
His wife, the former, Mary H. Milcetich, whom he married September 5, 1945, died March 25, 2006.
He is survived by his daughter, M. Linda (Gail) Baughman of McMurray, PA; his son, Jack S. (Kathleen) McCoy of Elmhurst, IL; a sister, Betty Fox of Florida; two brothers, Don (Helen) McCoy and Richard "Pud" McCoy both of Leetonia. Jack was a devoted grandfather to six grandchildren, Mary Grace McCoy of Elmhurst, IL, Margaret McCoy of Fairfax, VA, Ryan (Nicole) McCoy of Falls Church, VA, Patrick McCoy of Arlington, VA, Jennifer (Mark) Boyer of Plymouth, MI and Brian (Michelle) Baughman of Stuart, FL; and four great grandchildren, Aiden McCoy, Abigail Boyer and Caden and Bria Baughman. Jack will also be sadly missed by his faithful cat, Maggie.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew and Gene McCoy and a sister, Dorothy Smith.
Friends may call from 1-4:00 p.m. Saturday at the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia, OH. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Kari Lankford officiating. Inurnment will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA.
