East Palestine - April 16, 2008 - J. Carlyle Brown, Sr., 92, of 668 Jackson Street, went home to be with the Lord and his beloved wife at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday at the Parkside Health Care Center, Columbiana.

Mr. Brown was born October 11, 1915 in East Palestine, a son the late Thomas K. and Muriel D. French Brown and had lived in this area all of his life.

He was employed at the R. R. Spanabel Photographic Studio in the early 1930's and eight years as a cutter at the Kenmar Furniture Factory. He then served 25 months in the U.S. Army Signal Corps Photographic Division, the last year as a teacher before being receiving an honorable discharge in May of 1946 as a Tech Sgt. He then purchased the Spanabel Studio in May of 1946 and operated it until October of 1966. He was then employed as a City Clerk for 16 A½ years, retiring in April of 1983.

He was a Protestant by faith and attended the Grace Lutheran Church. He was a 50 year member and Past Master of East Palestine Lodge #417 F. & A.M. and a member of The Past Master's Association of the 24th District, East Palestine Chapter #204, East Palestine Council #123, East Palestine Chapter #381 Order of the Eastern Star, Pilgrim Commandery #55, Knights Templar of East Liverpool. He was a past member of The Aut-Mori Grotto in Youngstown and Welcome Lodge #729 I.O.O.F. of East Palestine. He was also a charter member of the Beaver Coin Club, Columbiana and George F. McBane Post #31 American Legion.

His wife, the former Pearl M. Woods, whom he married June 15, 1940 died on February 5, 1989.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol Ann Quintanilla of East Palestine and Mary Lou Brant, and her companion, Ray Woods of New Waterford; a son, James C. (Joanne) Brown, Jr. of East Palestine; 11 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack Brown; a son in law, Frank Quintanilla; and a great grandson, Jason Davis.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home with the Reverend Donald Pentz officiating. The combined group from the American Legion and VFW will accord military honors and burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home.

East Palestine Chapter will conduct OES services at 5:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and East Palestine Lodge will conduct Masonic Services at 9:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
