Listen to Obituary

East Palestine-Helen Huda, 89, passed away peacefully at the Christian House in East Palestine on July 16th, 2024. She was born in Negley on January 11th, 1935 to parents Denver and Mildred Rhodes.

Her childhood was spent outdoors exploring and riding horses. In high school, Helen  was on the cheerleading team and enjoyed diving every summer at the local pool.  After graduation, she married Joseph Huda on June 12th, 1953. They built a house together outside of Petersburg, where they lived for over 60 years. They had three children, whom she raised while working at Davis Studios as a photography assistant. Throughout the years Helen also worked as a lunch aide at Unity Elementary and as a clerk for Eastern Area County Court. She retired in 1998 after 22 years of working as a dispatcher for the Ohio State Patrol. She enjoyed many activities with friends and family – every month she would get together with her friends for card club, and for decades she would reunite with her friends from high school, dubbed the ”Purple Monsters.”  She was a talented artist and an avid gardener. She was fond of walking through the woods and hiking with her grandkids, always pointing out different plants and flowers along the way. Helen enjoyed staying active, participating in bowling leagues and Tuesday golf outings with the “Golf Girls.”   She volunteered her time in her retired years, delivering food for Meals on Wheels and directing traffic with her church members at Shaker Woods.  Helen loved spending time with family, and hosted as well as attended many family reunions throughout the years. She and Joe traveled extensively after retirement, visitng Egypt, Alaska, Italy and many destinations in between. Helen loved her family and would wait at the end of the driveway with welcome signs when her grandchildren and great-grandchilen would come visit. She would welcome them with her famous apple pie and a big hug. Helen will be missed by many.

She is survived by her sister; Virginia Beatrice; three children; Mindy Huda Remley, Lori Huda and Thomas Huda; three grandchildren; Jane Remley, Molly (Ryan) LeJeune and Rebecca (Jeremiah) Broderick; and three great-grandchildren; Brooke, Jack and Charlie.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Joseph Huda; her parents, Denver and Mildred; and her brother, Denver.
