East Palestine - November 3, 2006 - Harry Lloyd "Ben" Ward, age 103, formerly of East Martin Street, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday at the Salem Community Hospital of causes related to advanced age.
Harry was born April 22, 1903 in East Palestine, a son of William A. and Josephine Mahon Ward and had lived here all of his life. He lived in the same home that he was born in until 2004 when he moved to Courtyard of Lexington in Salem.
He worked in the family coal mine until 1928 and then went to work for ODOT until 1936. He then worked at Brittain Chevrolet as a mechanic and tow truck driver for 46 years until retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of East Palestine and a former member of the Knights of Pythias.
His wife, the former Margaret Gilbert, whom he married August 9, 1941 died March 23, 1986. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Erma Hardman and Gertrude Ward and three brothers, Paul, William, and Waldo Ward.
He is survived by two nephews, William (Connie) Ward of Salem and James (Julie) Ward of Columbus; a niece, Sherry Ward Lindsay of Avon, OH; and a cousin, Virginia (Ed) Oliver Kiernan of East Palestine.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Van Dyke-Swaney Funeral Home, East Palestine with the Reverend Donald Aull officiating. Burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
