East Palestine - February 1, 2008 - Guy W. "Penny" Mercer, Sr. 76, of 591 West North Avenue, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday at his home.
Mr. Mercer was born February 4, 1931 in Rogers, a son of Clarence and Ruth Gleason Mercer and had lived in this area all of his life. He had been employed as a truck driver for Commercial Lovelace Motor Freight in Youngstown and prior to that, B & N Trucking in Columbiana. He was co-owner of the former Carter Family Packing, New Waterford.
He was a member of the First Church of Christ, East Palestine where he sang in the choir and attended the Senior Saints Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Teamsters Retirement Club and also volunteered for Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Jo Ludwig, whom he married May 14, 1983; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Nancy) Ridgley of New Waterford and Mrs. Tom (Diane) Tray of Beaver, PA; three sons, Guy (Rhonda) Mercer, Jr. of Columbiana, Dan (Pam) Mercer of New Waterford, and Timothy Mercer, Thailand; three step daughters, Mrs. Ernie (Connie) Pugh of East Liverpool, Mrs. James (Bonnie) Hughes of Enon Valley, PA, and Tracy Walker (Richard Amato) of Poland; two step sons, Joe (Sandy) Hays of Rogers and Jeff (Unok) Hays of New Waterford; two sisters, Ruth Helen Rimes of Ellwood City, PA and June Feezle of Enon Valley, PA; one brother, Richard Knowels of East Liverpool; 29 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Mercer and Harold Knowels.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the First Church of Christ, East Palestine with Mr. Robert Helbeck, Minister officiating. Friends may call at the church from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Memorial tributes may be directed to the Alzheimers Foundation. Arrangements are being made by the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home, East Palestine.
