Leetonia - June 6, 2008 - Glenn R. "Shorty" Long, 92, of 4526 Fairfield School Road, died at 11:55 a.m. Friday at the Salem Community Hospital.
Glenn was born January 17, 1916 at Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late John Walter and Emma Hoffacker Long and moved to this area as a young boy where he remained for the rest of his life. On August 3, 1940, he married the love of his life, Evelyn McCowin from Cannelton, PA. She died April 4, 1979. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Seixas.
Shorty owned and operated a dairy farm on Rt. 558 and worked as a roller at Cold Metal/LTV Steel in Campbell. He lived the last two years with his daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Wilmer Lower. Glenn was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Leetonia where he served on Council and was a member of the Servicemen's Class. He was also a member of the Fairfield Ruritan Club where he held several offices. Shorty loved farming, fishing, and hunting. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He collected old coins and arrowheads gathered from his fields.
He survived by his children, Ellen Harris of Casselberry, FL, Don (Judy) Long of Columbus, Elaine (Wilmer) Lower of Leetonia, and Rex (Karen) Long of Leetonia; 12 grandchildren, Brian (Sarah) Misiak, Kevin (Stephanie) Misiak, Mike (Sara) Long, Annette Lower, Darcy (Stephen) Bien, Angie (Roy) Gilliam, Sharon (Jason) Black, Mary (Andy) Hoover, Roger Long, Evie (Rick) Rhynard, Rachel (Jeremy) Vignon, and Joe (Sarah) Long; as well as 19 great grandchildren.
Above all else, Glenn, along with his wife, Evelyn wholeheartedly loved their family and exemplified Christian love, compassion, and generosity. They were the positive role models to their past, present, and future generations. We will remember "Grampa" for his hard work and great pride in his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Kari Lankford officiating. Burial will follow in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens, Rogers. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana and at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.
