New Waterford - Georgia S. Farmer, age 80, of New Waterford, died on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Covington Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, East Palestine.
She was born on October 21, 1945, in Salem, the daughter of the late George and Beulah Grim Sutherin and lived in the area all her life. She grew up in East Palestine and was a 1963 graduate of East Palestine High School. She earned her undergraduate and master’s degree from Youngstown State University.
Georgia was employed as a teacher for Crestview School District for 44 years educating middle school students in Science, Math, and Social Studies. She was a recipient of the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation Teacher Award. Georgia and a colleague, Karen Moore started the Crestview Middle School Science Olympiad Team guiding the team to multiple state competitions at the Ohio State University.
She was an active member of East Fairfield United Methodist Church and belonged to several organizations including Columbiana County Retired Teachers, Columbiana County Historical Society and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was an active volunteer at the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center. She was also a member of several Quilt Guilds both local and in Florida and won many awards at both the Columbiana County and Canfield Fairs for quilting and baking.
Georgia is survived by her husband, Dennis L. Farmer, whom she married on July 21, 1979; her son, A. J. Miner of Cleveland; her daughter, Chrystal (Dan) Rosasco of Aurora; a brother, Barry (Connie) Sutherin of Deland, FL; three grandchildren, Colin Miner, Brendan Miner, and Gavin Rosasco; four nieces, Sabrina Lawrence, Jessica Miller, Carey Norton, and Caitlin Sutherin; a nephew, Jason Simcox; a sister-in-law, Marty Sutherin of Port Orange, FL; two brothers-in-law, Daniel Simcox of Columbiana and Randy Farmer of Leetonia. Georgia and her husband, Denny fostered many foster children who remain actively involved in her life including Kay Pitts, Loree Keister, and Angel Robinson.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald W. Sutherin, a sister-in-law, Kristy Simcox, a niece, Kelly Sutherin; a nephew, Brandy Sutherin; and two great nieces, Kayla Lawrence and Brittany Lawrence.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the East Fairfield United Methodist Church New Waterford, with Reverend Lisa Courtwright officiating. An additional calling hour will be held just prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at Columbiana Cemetery.
