East Palestine - January 8, 2005 - Eugene H. Oswalt, 85, of 1291 North Market Street, died Saturday morning at the Cleveland Clinic of complications following surgery.
Mr. Oswalt was born July 8, 1919 in Conway, PA, a son of Eugene and Elizabeth Puhr Oswalt and had lived here since 1965, coming from Crestline, OH. He had served in the US Navy during WWII and also in the Naval Reserve for several years.
He retired in 1979 from Conrail as a supervisor in the locomotive shop at the Conway Yard. He started with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1937, having worked there 42 years.
He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir and was also a member of George F. McBane Post #31 American Legion. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the Railway Supervisors Association and had golfed in the Brittain Golf League.
He is survived by his wife, the former June L. Bowen, whom he married June 12, 1941; three daughters, Sandra L. Clary of Struthers, Mrs. Paul (Rhonda) Simmons of East Palestine, and Mrs. David (Wendy) Heiland of Mechanicsburg, PA; a son Richard E. (Julia) Oswalt of Mansfield; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A sister, Elizabeth Leaf is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Van Dyke-Swaney Funeral Home, East Palestine, with Pastor Donald Pentz, of the church officiating. Burial will follow in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens, Rogers where Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post #31 and VFW Post 4579. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
