Elizabeth Bruton Rettig

Elizabeth S. Rettig, 65, of Hiddenite, NC and Tuscaloosa, AL went to be with God on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 3:30 a.m. in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Elizabeth was born August 10, 1950 in Durham, NC to the late Hoyle S. Bruton and Stella Pollitz Bruce. She graduated from Unionville High School in 1968 and Penn State University in 1972. She obtained her first master's degree in English from the University of Rhode Island in 1972 and also had a Masters in Communication from Wake Forrest University.

Mrs. Rettig had taught and enlightened students for many years at Calvert County Community College, Hickory NC as well as at other community colleges and one year at East Lincoln High School. At one time Elizabeth was also the Arts and Theater Critic for the Charlotte Observer and the Hickory Daily Record. Elizabeth had appeared in many productions and worked various other duties at the Hickory Community Theater and Newton Community Theater. She was a very active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hickory, NC where she served in many roles and was a longtime choir member, singing at many funerals. When in Tuscaloosa she attended Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She was married August 31, 2002 to Kim Rettig.

She is survived by her husband Kim of Tuscaloosa, AL and Hiddenite, NC; twin daughters, Mary Bruton of Cumberland, MD and Kathleen Bruton of Raleigh, NC; a son, Timothy Bruton of Salisbury, NC; a step-daughter, Katherine Rettig of Fayetteville, NC; a grandson, Seth Bruton of Salisbury, NC; three brothers, Jim (Ellen) Bruton of Santee, CA, Mike (Mary) Bruton of Oklahoma City, OK and Jon Bruton of Coatesville, PA.

Funeral Services are pending and will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to Holy Trinity Music Fund, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 547 6TH St. NW, P.O. Box 9580, Hickory, NC 28601 or the Hickory Community Theater, 30 3rd St. NW, Hickory, NC 28601.
