Edwin P. "Ted" Huffnagle, 84, of 325 Walnut Street, died at 2:29 a.m. Thursday at his home.
Mr. Huffnagle was born November 30, 1920 in Leetonia, a son of Sydney and Mary Boyle Huffnagle and had lived in this area all of his life. He was a 1938 graduate of Leetonia High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific during WW II.
He worked for the Erie, Erie-Lackawanna, and Conrail Railroads for 41 years, retiring as a locomotive engineer in 1981. He also owned and operated the former Leetonia Grill from 1948 to 1972. He then owned and operated Ted's Market and the Ohio State Liquor Agency from 1972 to 1995 in Leetonia.
He was very active in Democratic politics and was a longtime member of the Democrat Central and Executive Committee in Columbiana County for many years. He was Democrat Precinct Committeeman in Leetonia until the time of his death.
Ted was an avid Notre Dame Football fan and had not missed a football season at Notre Dame since 1939. He was a longtime member of the Notre Dame Quarterback Club of Notre Dame, Indiana.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was a life member of The Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman & Engineers, #1395, the Elks Lodge #305 of Salem, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #1496 of Leetonia, Joe Williams Post #131 American Legion of Leetonia, York Drexler Post #5532 VFW of Washingtonville and the U.S. Marine Memorial Club of San Francisco, CA.
He is survived by a son, Sydney and Carrie Huffnagle of Salem, a brother, Robert and Annabelle Huffnagle of Leetonia; two grandsons, Sydney Huffnagle II and Dominic Huffnagle; and a step granddaughter, Wendy Ellyson.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Caldwell, Bernice Windram, and Margaret Morris, and a brother, Merle Huffnagle.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Reverend Edward Brienz officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia.
