Columbiana - May 17, 2007 - E. J. "Buck" Savage, 88, formerly of Columbiana and Washingtonville, died at 2:50 a.m. Thursday at Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home in Boardman.
Buck was born September 23, 1918 in Trenton, PA, the son of Walter F. and Rose Edna Parkinson Savage and had lived in this area most of his life. He had served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as an aircraft mechanic. He then worked as a shovel operator for the former Lisbon Coal Company and had operated Savage Sporting Goods in Washingtonville for several years. He worked at Creighton Roofing and Siding and as an assembler at NRM in Columbiana and Leetonia, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Washingtonville where he had served on church council for several years. He had also served on the former Washingtonville Volunteer Fire Department and had been a member of the Beaver Creek Sportsman's Club. Buck enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in his garden as well as traveling with his wife, especially his fishing trips to Canada.
His wife, the former Mary Eleanor Davis, whom he married June 29, 1949 died March 28, 1997.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Savage Waggle of Columbiana; two sons, Walter F. (Carrie) Savage of Washingtonville and John M. (Patti) Savage of Canfield; six grandchildren, Scott (Andrea) Savage of Leetonia, Laura Savage of Cleveland, David Savage of Salem, Melissa (Gabe) Whorten of Austintown, Jamie Savage of Canfield, and Kristen Waggle of Columbiana; and three great grandchildren, Emily Savage, Garrett Savage, and Luke Whorten. Two sons, Ted Davis Savage and Terry Lee Savage; and three sisters, Nancy Nulf, Pearl Horner, and Eliza Lieber are also deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia, with Pastor William Medford officiating. Burial will follow in Washingtonville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday.
Material tributes may take the form of a donation to either the Trinity Lutheran Church or Hospice of the Valley.
