Columbiana – Dorothy Lucille Whitacre, 86, of Leetonia, went home to her mansion in heaven Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center, Columbiana.
The former Dorothy Carter was born on March 23, 1931 and was raised on Carter Rd. in New Waterford, by her parents the late Wilford Lycurgas and Mary Pearl Houlette Carter.
Dorothy was a faithful servant at the Lake Mount Church of Christ since she was baptized on March 22, 1970. She helped with the Ladies Christian Workers in all their projects. She was always available to prepare the ham and turkey funeral dinners for others. In the fall she was busy getting everything ready to make hardtack candy that in turn raised money for Elkhorn Christian Camp. The Choir was fortunate to have Dorothy's lovely tenor voice for many many years. Never missing a service, she loved fellowshipping with everyone young and not so young. For years, she always had a stick of gum for the little ones that came up to her. She was secretary at Lake Mount till she retired and was always there to help the congregation.
Dorothy will be sadly missed by so many when they look at the pew she occupied for so many years.
She was preceded in death on February 4, 2008 by her husband Guy Mercer, whom she married on December 10, 1948 and together they raised five children.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Daren Whitacre, whom she married September 3, 1982, and they lived happily in Leetonia. Dorothy also leaves behind two daughters, Nancy (Robert) Ridgely of New Waterford and Diane (Tom) Tray of Beaver, PA; three sons, Guy (Rhonda) Mercer of Butler, PA, Dan (Pam) Mercer of New Waterford and Tim Mercer of Thailand; a step daughter, Ellen (Glen) Burlingame of Lisbon; a brother, John (Betty) Carter of Lebonon, IL. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, two step grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren and one great great grandson, all whom she loved deeply.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Henry, Wilber and George Garrod as well as Willis Carter; seven sisters, Louise Webber, Edith Ward, Marie Rex, Erma Rinkleib, Gertude Jacks, Lois Smith, Ester Reed and Mary Flowers and a grandson Brent Mercer.
