Columbiana - November 11, 2008 - Donald W. Jackson, 88, of 333 West Salem Street, died Tuesday at his home.

Mr. Jackson was born November 28, 1919 in East Liverpool, a son of Donald R. and Lillian R. Jackson. The family came to Washingtonville in 1920 and Don lived in this area all of his life. He was a 1938 graduate of Leetonia High School. He served in WW II as a Flight Engineer in the 15th Army Air Force having flown 49 bombing missions in a B24 Bomber out of Italy.

He was a lifelong member of the Robbins United Methodist Church, Washingtonville, where he had served in many capacities and had been a member of the choir which he had also directed for several years. Don played the bass for many bands in the area and was a charter member of Doc's Dixielanders. Don was a member of the Joe Williams Post #131 American Legion and York Drexler Post #5532 VFW. He had been a member of the former Salem Musicians Union and the former Quaker City Legion Band. He had worked as a machinist at Hunt Valve Company for 32 years and as a NC Programmer at Deming Pump. He last worked as a driver for Gold Cross Limousine service for 13 years. He retired as a Major of the Ohio State Patrol Auxiliary in 1989 with 33 years of service.

He was preceded in death on August 10, 1990 by his wife, the former Helen Weber Fast whom he married April 5, 1979 as well as four brothers, Glen, Wayne, Samuel, and James Jackson.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia with the Reverend Cheryl Vanatsky officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Salem VFW and Salem Amvets Honor Guard. Burial will be in the Washingtonville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
