Born Dolores Margaret Schild on May 1, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. The daughter of parents, Peter and Margaret Schild. Dolores had an older brother, Charles "Chuck" Schild who was married to Vera Schild (both deceased), and is survived by her younger sister, Renee Dufon and Renee's husband, John Dufon. During WWII, Dolores worked at the FHA in Washington, DC, where she met her husband, John M. Rahter. They were married on January 24, 1944 at Keesler Field, Mississippi, where John was stationed upon joining the Army Air Corp. John's first leave from the service was not until December of that year. Dolores was preparing to meet him in Washington, DC for their honeymoon when her Doctor discovered that she had advanced bone cancer and ordered her to see a specialist immediately. Dolores insisted she "was going to see her husband". Her Doctor only agreed to allow her to travel to DC if she promised to see a surgeon, Dr. Brian Blades, the following Monday morning, which she did.
