Columbiana-Charles W. "Charley" Bell, 90, formerly of Leetonia, died at 3:30 pm Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center.
Mr. Bell was born December 14, 1924 in Salem, a son of George and Elsie Wintersheimer Bell and had lived in this area all of his life. Charley was a machinist for the former Sekely Industries in Salem of 31 years retiring in 1988. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was also a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Leetonia where he was active in the choir and the Men's Club helping with bingo and the annual festival. Charley was a member of the Groovin Grandpa's Harmonica Group, the Dulcimor Group and the Jubilee Chorus of Salem.
Charley is survived by his wife, the former Martha Martin, whom he married June 25, 1949; two daughters, Mary Ann Bell of Austintown and Marlene (David) Zeigler of Burton, OH; four sons, Kevin (Teresa) Bell of Newbury, John (Debra) Bell of Butler, Gregory (Lois) Bell of Sharpsburg, GA and Brian (Janice) Bell of Salem; three sisters, Minnie Brown of Lisbon, Carol (William) Redd of Columbiana and Genevieve Yeager of Salem; one brother, Joseph (Eleanor) Bell of Lake Milton; thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
A daughter, Janet Gordon, two sons, Robert and William Bell, two sisters, Mary Rodacay and Pauline Thrash and five brothers, George, Edward, Thomas, James and Richard Bell preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Monday, July 27, 2015 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Leetonia with the Reverend Robert Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Salem Honor Guard and bagpipe tribute performed by his grandson, Nathan Zeigler. Friends may call from 4-6 pm Sunday, July 26, 2015 at the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia.
Material tributes in memory of Charley may be made to the Salvation Army in Salem.
