New Waterford - June 4, 2006 - Charles Dean Barker, 82, of New Waterford, died at 11:41 p.m. Sunday at his home.
Mr. Barker was born November 13, 1923 in Spartanburg, SC, a son of Charles and Jennie D. Bishop Barker and had lived in this area since 1989, coming from Boardman. He had served in the US Army in Europe during WW II. He had been employed as a car service agent for the Association of American Railroads for 18 years, retiring in 1969.
He was a member of the New Waterford United Methodist Church, George F. McBain Post #31 American Legion, East Palestine, East Palestine Lodge #417 F. & A.M., East Palestine Chapter #204 Royal Arch Masons, East Palestine Council #123 Royal & Select Masons, Youngstown Shrine Club, Scottish Rite, Valley of Youngstown, and Pilgrim Commandery #55 Knights Templar. He was an amateur radio operator or "ham" with the call sign of KB8DFY and was a member of the East Palestine Amateur Radio Club. He was also a Skywarn Observer for the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.
He is survived by his wife, the former Louise A. Jacobson, whom he married April 9, 1949; a daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Carolyn G.) Mook of East Palestine; two sons, George T. (Lisa) Barker of Huntington Beach, CA and Charles L. Barker of Reading, PA; a sister, Mrs. Kenn (Dorothy L.) Schaefer of Milwaukee, WI; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A twin sister, Jennie L. Barker is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the New Waterford United Methodist Church with Pastor Kenneth Rambo officiating. Burial will follow in New Waterford Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Van Dyke-Swaney Funeral Home, East Palestine where East Palestine Lodge will conduct Masonic Services at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Material tributes may take the form of a donation to either the church building fund or Hospice of the Valley.
