Carolyn Lee Simmons

New Waterford-March 8, 2012-Carolyn L. Simmons, 76, of New Waterford, died at 8:30 pm Thursday at her home following a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Simmons was born March 25, 1935 in Youngstown, a daughter of Vincent and Juanita Holloway Swagger and had lived in this area all of her life.

Carolyn was a 1956 graduate of St. Elizabeth's Nursing School and was a registered nurse for St. Elizabeth Hospital for 12 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbiana. She also was a member of the Western Reserve Wood Carvers Association.

Her husband, James F. Simmons, whom she married September 22, 1956, died May 29, 2001.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (John) Rose of New Waterford; her son, Robert L. Simmons of St. Petersburg, FL; a sister, Mary (Terry) Himes of Berlin Center; a brother, John Swagger of Boardman; and her granddaughter, Jessica Rose. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Swagger.

A memorial service will be held at 8:00 pm Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana with Reverend Carolyn Griffeth officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 pm Friday at the funeral home.
