Anna Marie Paes passed away peacefully Saturday evening at her home on Wallace Avenue with her devoted husband Bill at her side.
Anna was born in Cannelton, PA on October 10, 1922 to Charles and Mary Rebecca Berresford McGuckin, came to East Palestine at the age of six, and lived there for the remainder of her life. Anna and Bill wintered in Palm Circle Park, Jensen Beach, FL for 15 years. She was a member of the garden club and enjoyed the shuffleboard and bocce tournaments. Bowling was also a sport she played for many years in the East Palestine area.
Anna owned and operated the American Restaurant in Leetonia, OH and was employed at Neil's Restaurant prior to retiring. She later managed her son's store, Thinking Of You. Getting together with her EPHS 1940 graduating class members for reunions and luncheons was another favorite of hers. The First Church of Christ was an important part of Anna's life and she always enjoyed Bob Helbeck's sermons and appreciated his visits while she was ill. She also appreciated the prayers and visits from her friends that she had made at church over the years.
Although she was small in stature, Anna will always be remembered by her children, husband, family, and friends as a women of incredible strength and courage to persevere and overcome any obstacle placed in her path. She did this with a smile on her face, love in her heart, and her favorite saying "C'est la vie".
She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Paes, whom she married Jan. 18, 1963; three daughters, Shirley Glavan of East Palestine, Patty Winterburn of Jensen Beach, FL, and Barbara Keresty of Madison, WI; a son, Terry Keresty of East Palestine; a sister in law, Virginia McGuckin of East Palestine; three grandchildren, Frank Ganoe, Sam (Trisha) Elliott, and Abby (Rick) Puccio; and four great grandchildren, Ciara Ganoe, Emma and Jack Elliott, and Alexander Puccio.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Percic and Betty Wudske; and three brothers, Leonard McGuckin, James McGuckin, and Charles "Barney" McGuckin. Friends may call at the Van Dyke-Swaney Funeral Home, East Palestine, from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1, 2008. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Van Dyke-Swaney Funeral Home, East Palestine with Mr. Robert Helbeck, Minister officiating. Burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery.
