Salem- Anna May Hatch died peacefully on March 17, 2026, at her residence. She was born June 24, 1935, in Altoona, PA., the daughter of Edwin and Fay Swope Wertz. She attended the Cathedral School in Altoona and graduated from Altoona Catholic High School in 1953.
She was employed by the W.T. Grant Co. and the Middle Department of Fire Underwriters. Anna May married Michael Hatch on Oct 2, 1954, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona. Their marriage of 66 years was blessed with 8 children.
Anna May’s life was marked by a deep commitment to her faith and a dedication to serving others. She was a member of St. Jude Parish in Columbiana where she served in many capacities having earned Master’s Certificates in teaching CCD and Youth Ministry. She was appointed Coordinator of Religious Education at the parish in 1978. She served on the Board of Religious Education of the Youngstown Diocese, worked in Liturgical Ministry, serving the parish as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Liturgical Coordinator, CCD teacher and presenter, minister to the Homebound and Parish Sacristan.
Anna May belonged to Our Lady’s Rosary Bead Makers and taught many others to make rosary beads which were sent to the mission fields all over the world. She loved working with young people and watching high school sports. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Anna May is survived by her 8 children: Michael A. (Maggie) Hatch, Christopher A. (Marilyn) Hatch, Julie (Jerry) Rader, Mark (Carla) Hatch, Janine (Bob) Cox, Ann (Scott) Grist, Milissa (Carmen) Romeo and Lee (Denise) Hatch. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Michael Lee (Jenalee) Hatch, Christopher W. (Morgan) Hatch, Audra Hatch, Luke Roberts, Nick (Crystal) Roberts, Chase Rader, Charles (Kathyrn) Hatch, Randy (Beth) Hatch, Brad (Sarah) Hatch, Marshall Hatch, Krysten (Bryan) Heim, Keri (Paul) Munson, Kacey (Cody) Plaskett, Jonathan (Rachel) Grist, Caitilin (Ryan) Moss, Alainna, John Michael and Emmy Romeo, Owen and Kenley Hatch. Anna May also leaves 20 great grandchildren as well as her brothers and sisters, Sr. Mary Lucilla Wertz, SSC, Beth (Ed) Guy, Eddie (Gloria) Wertz, Joseph Wertz and Denny Wertz; sister-in-law, Jayne Wertz and brothers-in-law, Tom Temofonte and Roy Willoughby.
Anna May was preceded in death by her husband Michael on March 5, 2020; a granddaughter Jana Roberts and grandsons Joseph and Alan Hatch; a brother Thomas Wertz and sisters Carol Temofonte, Mary Linda Willoughby and Marian Fay Bumann.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana.
A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 11:00 am at Saint Carlo Acutis Parish, Saint Jude Church, Columbiana, with Father Thomas Zeigler officiating.
Burial will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Leetonia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Carlo Acutis Parish, Saint Jude Church & Caritas Apostolates.
