Ann Pietras Barnes, 94, of Auburn Skilled Nursing in Salem passed away at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2026 following a long illness.
Ms. Barnes was born Anna Mae Olup on July 24, 1931 to parents Walter F. Olup and Helen Pawlitska Olup in Pittsburgh, PA, where she grew up with her three sisters Irene, Dorothy and Helen and brother Benjamin. Ann was married to Robert D. Pietras in Pittsburgh in 1949. They moved their young family to Columbiana in 1962 with their five children. She was a long-time member of St. Jude Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Columbiana. She enjoyed a long, successful career in the retail industry beginning with Ben Franklin Stores in Columbiana, a long tenure with Kaufman’s in Canton and finally at Wamsutta Mills in Boise, ID.
Ann divorced her husband Robert in 1977, and was briefly married to Richard Barnes of Columbiana.
In 2002, Ann moved to Boise, ID., where she enjoyed watching her youngest grandchildren grow up. After suffering a debilitating stroke in 2014, she moved to Auburn Skilled Nursing in Salem, where she never fully recovered. Her mind remained sharp, however, as she loved interacting and bantering with the staff there.
Ann is survived by her five children: Roy Pietras (Rose) of Louisville, Gary Pietras (Peggy) of Marietta, GA., Phyllis Kimble (David) of Salem, Ruth Streng (Dennis, recently deceased) of New Waterford, and Robert Pietras Jr. (Kristine) of Boise, ID. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
Ann enjoyed many extracurricular activities including embroidery, sewing, reading, shopping and the occasional glass of Crown Royal. She was an avid fan of all Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Steelers.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 11, 2026 at the Columbiana Cemetery Chapel with interment to follow in Columbiana Cemetery.
Ann requested that any potential donations that are made in her name be sent to her favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana. Sign the register and send condolences at www.familycareservices.com
