Negley - January 23, 2008 - Alice G. "Gen" Dickey, 87, of 7543 Prospect Street, died at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday at the Vista Center, Lisbon.
Mrs. Dickey was born March 29, 1920 in Cannelton, PA, a daughter of Clifford and Clara Nicely McCowin and had lived in this area all of her life. She was a 1938 graduate of East Palestine High School. After high school, she worked in the office at the West Darlington Clay Company. During WW II, she taught elementary school at the Blue Ridge Elementary School in Cannelton, PA. During the 1950's and 1960's, she, along with her husband, owned and operated the former Dickey's Grocery Store in Negley and later, was employed at the William A. Dickey & Sons Hardware in Negley.
She was a member of the Negley United Methodist Church, Anna Eckley Chapter # 392 Order of the Eastern Star where she was a past worthy matron and was a member over 50 years. She was a charter member of the Negley Firemen's Auxiliary where she had served as treasurer for over 20 years.
Her husband, Edward M. Dickey, whom she married July 20, 1940 died May 14, 1995. She is survived by a son, Robert (Nancy) Dickey of Lisbon; a sister, Mrs. James (Sara Jane) McLaughlin of East Palestine; and two grandchildren, Sarah Dickey (Andrew) Blocksom and Benjamin Dickey.
A brother, C. William McCowin is also deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home, East Palestine, with the Reverend Charles Ready officiating. Burial will follow in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Sunday.
Memorial tributes may take the form of a donation to either the Negley United Methodist Church or the Negley Firemen's Auxiliary.
